OMG I’m So excited to finally share the cover for A Time of Witches and through the best kind of partnership - with People Magazine!!

I have been sitting on this for what feels like forever, and I am so deeply in love with this cover. It embodies everything I love about this book: the mystery, the dual timelines, the ancestral thread of power, the quiet defiance of women who were told to remain silent, the bracken, the abandoned old manor, magpies, and (of course) the moon.

It feels gives all the atmospheric, haunting, powerful female feels and I’m so here for it!

As stated in the title of the article, this story was inspired by a recurring dream I had when I was younger. After decades of dreaming this story up, a year of research, trips to England and Savannah, layers of edits, and so much heart poured onto the page, seeing it wrapped in artwork that captures its spirit so perfectly is surreal.

And here’s something that makes it even more special to me:

The cover artist is the same artist whose work has graced novels by Alix E. Harrow whose books (and covers!) I have admired for years. To now have my own story interpreted through that same artistic lens feels like an absolute dream!

But that’s not all.

✨ There will be sprayed edges (my publisher is preparing something very special for that reveal) and I cannot wait until we get to share that piece with you.

✨ And there’s a little black cat who is very important to this story and will be featured on the back cover. I haven’t even seen it yet, but I can’t wait!

At its heart, A Time of Witches is about two women, one in present-day Georgia, one in 1645 England, bound by blood and a centuries-old legacy that refuses to stay buried.

It’s about reclaiming power, about breaking silence, and the magic that survives even when history tries to extinguish it.

After all, there’s a little magic in all of us. 🖤

And if ever there were a book that feels like a piece of my soul, this is the one.

I’ve known what the cover for A Time of Witches looks like for a while now and I haven’t been able to share it - and it’s been killing me!

OMG, it is SO gorgeous and so perfectly encapsulates the book and I’m FINALLY going to be able to share it!

On Monday, in partnership with a very special national publication, I’ll be sharing the reveal of the cover for A Time of Witches.

This story has been in my head for over twenty-five years. I’ve been buried in it this last year and a half with research books, hands-on work, research trips, and the writing of it. To finally see the cover coming out makes this dream so real!

It is absolutely gorgeous. Truly. It embodies everything I love about this story.

What I Read in January

January was a heavy travel month for me, which meant long drives, long flights, and a lot of airport time, which translated into a lot of reading.

Here’s what I read:

• A Founding Mother by Stephanie Dray & Laura Kamoie (ARC) – The incredible story of Abigail Adams - wife to one president, mother to another, and a powerhouse of a founding mother for our nation.

• Forget Me Not by Stacy Willingham – A Southern psychological thriller about a woman who suddenly discovers new clues about her sister who went missing years before.

• You Deserve to Know by Aggie Blum Thompson – A domestic suspense layered with secrets and neighborhood tension when friendship is torn apart by murder.

• Anatomy of an Alibi by Ashley Elston – A fabulously twisty thriller about how much an alibi can twist a case.

• The Scorpion Thief by Janyre Tromp (ARC) – A historical thriller trailing through DC, Cairo, and New Orleans.

• The Secret Life of Sunflowers by Marta Molnar – A beautiful blend of art history and historical fiction inspired by the women connected to Van Gogh, including the life of his sister-in-law.

• The Push by Ashley Audrain – This book was addicting! An unexpected thriller about a mother with a daughter she can’t quite connect to - brilliantly written in a way that made it impossible to stop reading.

• The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray – A great book for anyone who is considering cutting back on alcohol or is ‘sober-curious’.

• Death Was Not on the Guest List by Jenni L. Walsh (ARC) – A fun, fast-paced mystery with charm and clever female protagonists in the ultimate ‘whodunit’ set in the 20s.

• The Violin Maker’s Secret by Evie Woods (ARC) – OMG you guys are in for such a treat with this one! A violin turns up in the airport lost and found, and every person whose life it touches is irreparably changed. All the feels, and I cried!

• Their Double Lives by Jaime Lynn Hendrix – A gripping thriller about a woman whose desperation to save her dog might lead her to poison a stranger…until that stranger turns out to be her ex-boyfriend.

• Writing Creativity and Soul by Sue Monk Kidd – Highly recommend this for authors and creatives about channeling the creative part of yourself, as Sue Monk Kidd shares intimate parts of her own writing journey and process - beautiful and inspiring!

• The Wrong Sister by Claire Douglas – When sisters swap lives and one ends up attacked, the other knows its likely her fault in this interesting thriller.

• The Husbands by Holly Gramazio – A woman returns home from a bridal shower to discover she has a husband. But when he goes up into the attic another one comes out! This was hilarious and exactly what I needed in my life.

• A Pair of Aces by Marie Benedict (ARC) – A powerful story of justice with two formidable women forging an unlikely alliance between a madam of a brothel and Manhattan’s first Black female prosecutor.

Some notes about the books in January:

• A little levity - January was a hard month. The news was dark; we’ve had a lot of health issues at home, and somehow, one month seemed long enough to fill a few months on the calendar. I was desperate for something to offer levity and lightness and The Husbands by Holly Gramazio fit that bill. It was cute and silly and funny in all the right ways. If you’re looking for some fun lightness in your life, I really do recommend this book. I listened to the audiobook, which was fabulously narrated by Miranda Raison.

• Self-help - I know I mentioned in my previous newsletter about how I love how January gives me the chance to be a new me and improve myself. That said, I want to share with you the books I’m reading about how to improve my life, including January’s book, The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray. I don’t know that I am planning on going for full sobriety as I do enjoy the occasional glass of wine with friends, but I would count myself as ‘sober-curious’. I’m no spring chicken (LOL!) and I’ve noticed at 45 that even one glass of wine has me feeling foggy the next morning, which made me wonder how alcohol impacts my mind and body in the long run. I found this book to be very interesting and refreshing. Though I haven’t had the experiences the author has, it was still relatable and fascinating.

Heart to Heart

Last weekend’s Savannah Book Festival absolutely blew me away! As I walked toward the Savannah Theater, the line was wrapped completely around the building. Over 550 readers filled the theater, and they had to turn people away because there wasn’t room left. I had so many wonderful readers and friends who reached out after to say they weren’t able to get in, which I’m so sad to have missed them!

Afterward, I signed hundreds of books and got to meet so many incredible readers. Some I’ve met before, some new - and many husbands and boyfriends who stood in line so their book-loving ladies could attend the next speaker’s chat. Now that’s true love!

As if all this wasn’t magical enough, Leopold’s Ice Cream had a special ice cream for my book - The Secret Strawberry Sorbet Lemonade Society. And it was delicious!

Unfortunately, I came home to a house of sickness and have been a little under the weather since coming home. Lucky for me, Ink and Gunner have been excellent nurses and very committed lap companions. They’ve been taking turns alternating sleeping under the cover with me and being at my feet (because, you know, frienemies…).

In the middle of all of this excitement and sickness, I’ve also been working away at my copy edits for A Time of Witches - another stop closer to getting ARCs out into the world and I’m SO excited for when they will finally hit NetGalley. Don’t worry - I’ll let you know when it drops.

And now a very important note…and something people don’t talk about very often.

I had my colonoscopy.

It feels like such a private thing that many of us avoid mentioning it altogether, but I think it really needs to be normalized.

Several people I know have passed away from colon cancer, including my own grandmother. Early screening saves lives. Truly.

I confess, I had to reschdule it three times because of travel. I confess that it’s hard to find a solid week that I’m home where I can do two days of low fiber, plus the “prep day” and then the actual colonoscopy day where I have a full day to take off to recover from the procedure.

Was it fun? No.

Was it convenient? Nope.

Am I glad I did it? ABSOLUTELY.

Knowing I was clear of polyps is peace of mind knowing I can set my mind at ease and that I will continue to be healthy for my family. I’ll have another one in five years, given my family history.

If you are at the age where you should schedule one, or if your doctor has recommended it, please do it.

It isn’t glamorous. It isn’t fun. But it is important. And I believe we should talk about the things that keep us here longer for the people we love. And I’m leaving you with a fabulously unflattering pic of me post-anesthesia here:

Now that we’ve gotten THAT of the way, Valentine’s Day - or as I love to affectionately refer to it - Galentine’s Day - is this Saturday!

I hope you have a beautiful Valentine’s Day, whether that means celebrating with someone you love, your friends, your family, your pets… or simply a really good book. Regardless of how you celebrate the day, know that you are loved!

Today is also OldestMinion’s birthday. She’s turning 20. OMG my baby is a grown up!

Also, I truly thought that with her being grown and living a couple of hours away, I’d be okay still coming to this conference like I do every year. Except she’s been home since Sunday night, and I miss her so much it hurts. I have to confess, I hate that I’m not there for her birthday and will not be missing another birthday again. I know so many moms understand this particular kind of guilt, and this one has been sitting heavy on my heart. I’ll be home tomorrow though and can’t wait to see her!

Book on Sale

On the book front, I wanted to let you know that The Keeper of Hidden Books e-book is currently on sale for $2.99, but only for a very limited time.

This was an incredibly personal book for me to write. My family is from Poland, and although they emigrated before World War II, writing this story gave me a chance to connect with my heritage in a way I never had before. Also, my mom came with me to Warsaw for my research trip and knowing she would read my book later and remember all the things we learned together and how I applied it to the story made it extra special.

The novel is inspired by extraordinary journals from Warsaw’s public librarians - brave men and women who risked everything to save books from Nazi destruction and secretly operated underground libraries when public libraries were shut down in 1942. This story holds such a special place in my heart, and I hope it finds its way into yours.

I’m heading to the Savannah Book Festival this week, and I could not be more excited. I absolutely love Savannah—it’s where A Time of Witches opens, and I was there last year doing research for the book. The history, the atmosphere, the food… it’s all magic.

Being invited to be part of this festival is such an honor, and I’ve already heard from so many readers who’ll be attending. And my book is apparently getting its own ice cream flavor at Leopold’s. I can’t wait to see everyone who’s able to come! And later this month, I’ll also be in Arizona, which I’m really looking forward to.

Meet Janie Chang

This week I’m also thrilled to share about my dear friend and agent sister, Janie Chang - and also include a fun GIVEAWAY!

The very first year we had our agent-sister retreat (in Kauai) , Janie and I were roommates and had just the best time ever. I an ARC of her new book, The Fourth Princess, and I could not put it down - it is so good. One lucky reader will win a copy here.

Hello to all and thank you Madeline for inviting me to your newsletter!

Like Madeline, I write historical fiction. But THE FOURTH PRINCESS is a Gothic novel set in Old Shanghai, in 1911. I’ve wanted to write a Gothic novel for some time now, to tackle the challenge of setting the story in China. Gothic novels are usually anchored by location, a mysterious mansion, somewhere in Europe or the UK. There are sightings and sounds that may or not may be a ghost. There is an innocent young woman who uncovers a dangerous secret that puts her in jeopardy. I wanted to see whether I could transplant those Gothic tropes to an Asian setting, giving it a fresh twist while staying within recognizable parameters of the genre.

So working through those necessary elements, one thing was clear: Shanghai was a place where East and West co-existed, sometimes uneasily. So I needed two characters, one foreign and one Chinese. There’s Caroline is American, wealthy, newlywed and newly arrived in Shanghai. There’s Lisan, who is an orphan with no memory of her past before being taken into her guardian’s home. Caroline hires Lisan to be her social secretary.

But I still needed the right house. Every Gothic novel needs a mysterious mansion; without that, it was hard for me to picture my characters as they moved through rooms or to build the right kind of menacing atmosphere. It was when I found a photograph of a huge mansion called Dennartt that the story began unreeling in my head. Built on the outskirts of Shanghai in 1898, it was the estate of English barrister William Vern Drummond. It was huge – there were stables for his polo ponies and housing for his servants. There were tennis courts, rose gardens, kitchen gardens. There was even a manmade lake on the estate – and this lake plays a part in the story. Shanghai was home to Drummond and his family. After he died, his widow sold off Dennartt and and I went into historical nerd heaven when I found a news clipping that advertised the sale, describing the house and listing its contents.

THE FOURTH PRINCESS was a lot of fun to write and I hope it’s fun to read. An early reviewer said she literally screamed out loud when one of the plot twists revealed itself. That’s how I hope all readers react!

ABOUT THE BOOK

As Caroline struggles with Grey’s extortion and Thomas’s mysterious illness, Lisan’s future is upended when she learns the truth about her past, and why her identity has been hidden all these years. All the while, strange incidents accelerate, driving Lisan to doubt her sanity as Lennox Manor seems unwilling to release her until she fulfills demands from beyond the grave.

What I’m Up To

As for what I’m up to right now: I’ve been having the most inspiring time at this incredible mastermind, including a fascinating historical tour last night with a group of brilliant authors. We were even invited to a pre-Mardi Gras parade on Saturday and braved the freezing temps to get an up close view of the parade. It was SO much fun! Here some of us are with our Maris Gras sparkles :)

Every year I come to this mastermind and leave feeling creatively recharged and so grateful for the minds and hearts gathered here.

At home, my husband is almost fully recovered from his gallbladder surgery over Christmas, and YoungestMinion is beginning to start easing off her crutches. Seeing my family on the mend has been such a relief. And Ink is definitely back to her salty self.

Before I left for New Orleans, Ink was snuggled up in bed with me in the middle of the night. Then Gunner wanted to snuggle and laid ON TOP OF HER! I was so tired, I just acknowledged the danger before immediately falling back asleep. I’m not sure how much time passed before we woke to an angry yowl and then Ink leapt up, propelling herself off my stomach from a dead sleep. Not gonna lie, that felt like a bowling ball hitting me in the belly when I was not expecting it (no offense Ink…) I have a paw puncture marks on my stomach to show for it and, yes, Ink is DEFINITELY feeling better. ROFL

On the front of A Time of Witches: copy edits should be arriving very soon, which means ARCs are hopefully not far behind. Fingers crossed! Yesterday my editor sent me a preview of the interior pages, and the chapter section art is absolutely beautiful. Seeing the pieces come together like this makes the release feel so real, and I cannot wait for you to step into this story!

You may have noticed I’ve been a little quieter lately - I didn’t send out a newsletter last week, I’m slow to reply to messages on social media and reply to comments, and I have my out of office on in my email to give myself more time to reply to messages.

The past few weeks have been one of those stretches where everything seems to have happened at once. Following Mr. Awesome’s surgery over Christmas, YoungestMinion had scheduled knee surgery last week that has sadly come with some unexpected complications. And on top of it all, poor Ink ended up with a UTI. Throw in a new quarter starting with my MFA program and my life juggling skills are feeling a little wobbly.

Fortunately, Mr. Awesome is healing well, YoungestMinion is (hopefully) through the worst of her complications with her knee, and Ink is already feeling well enough to run from me when she sees the syringe of meds I have to squirt down her throat (sorry, Ink!). I’m immensely grateful everyone seems on the mend.

Family always comes first, and I wouldn’t change that for anything, but it has meant shifting my attention where it was most needed and giving myself a little grace elsewhere. If you’ve reached out and noticed a slower response, that’s why. I’m deeply grateful for the kindness and patience I’ve been met with, and for a community that understands that sometimes life simply asks us to pause and tend to the people we love. <3

A Time of Witches Update

Things are moving right along with A Time of Witches! My editor loves the changes I made in my edits and the next stop is copy edits! It’s so exciting to see how fast this is progressing.

And I have some seriously exciting news! First of all, I’ve seen the cover and it is GORGEOUS! A little different from my other books, but with some magical realism in this story, it should have a different style of cover. I’ll give you a hint…the designer of this cover is the same one who does Alix E. Harrow’s covers.

And the most exciting tease ever…it’s going to have SPRAYED EDGES! Those of you who follow my Friday Reads I do on Instagram know how much I adore sprayed edges.

I just saw the mock-up yesterday of the cover and the sprayed edges, and I’m just in LOVE!

I cannot wait to share it with all of you!

Secret Project Underway!

You may recognize some of these gorgeous faces in this silly group pic: Kristina McMorris, Kate Quinn, Alisson Pataki, and Stephanie Dray…and we have something VERY exciting in the works.

I was in California the week before YoungestMinion’s surgery where we all stayed in the same house for several days like a giant adult sleepover and were hard at work on a secret project we’ve been planning for months now. We worked almost nonstop the entire time we were there, pausing only to do an event with Adventures by the Book at the Coronado Library where it sold out at over 200 attendees.

I can’t tell you too much about the project yet (so mean, I know!) but we’ll be announcing more details in the spring with a fun launch. And just a little hint, we’re not writing a book together, it’s something else!

What I’m Up To

The next few weeks are shaping up to be busy in the very best way. I’ll be heading to the west coast of Florida tomorrow to stay with my best friend, Eliza Knight, while we do two events together (listed above). I always love getting to spend time with her and her family, and I’m so looking forward to it.

The following week, I’ll be in New Orleans for a special master class I take part in once a year with other authors. It’s one of those grounding experiences that always leaves me inspired, and I can’t wait to dive into it again.

Right after New Orleans, I’ll be heading to Savannah for the Savannah Book Festival, which is such an honor to be part of. Being there feels especially meaningful after spending time in Savannah last year researching A Time of Witches, where the contemporary portion of the story is set. It’s a city layered with history, beauty, and just a hint of magic.

Hello, 2026!

We kept New Year’s Eve pretty low-key this year while John continues to recover from surgery (and for anyone worried, he truly only took a tiny sip from that champagne glass 😉).

Confession: I love the new year. It’s a fresh start, a chance to renew, to make a gameplay to strengthen and tweak. I’m a goal kinda girl and I have all the goals for 2026!

There is so much I’m excited about this year… the release of A Time of Witches, some incredible events lined up for this year, my first ever reader-based tour trip to Lisbon and Paris with Natasha Lester and several of our readers, a trip to California that I’m heading out for today (I’m at the airport right now), and a very special project I can’t quite talk about yet (though this week may offer a tiny hint 👀).

Last year was actually my first time doing the challenge, and my goal was 100 books… and I finished with 117 (I finished another one after this graphic was made). I also managed to collect all the little genre bookmarks, which turned out to be a surprisingly fun side quest. What I Read

December was a little chaotic between turning in edits, holiday madness, and a few unexpected family emergencies - squeezing in reading felt like a small miracle. But I still managed to sneak in some wonderful stories, and I’m so glad I did.

Here’s what I read last month:

-Confessions on the 7:45 by Lisa Unger — a twisty, suspenseful psychological thriller about strangers confessing their secrets to one another.

-The Restoration Garden by Sara Blaydes — a dual timeline WWII historical fiction about a garden restoration and the secrets it may uncover.

- The Names by Florence Knapp — a lyrical, emotional, and beautifully written story about how a name can have such an impact on someone’s life.

-The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware — a gothic suspense with a deliciously eerie edge about a woman who has a sudden windfall of an inheritance that really is probably not hers.

-The Seed Keeper by Diane Wilson — a powerful, reflective generational story deeply rooted in family and land.

- That’s Not My Name by Megan Lally — fast-paced, creepy, and full of twists about a woman found with no memory and the man who claims she’s his daughter.

What I’m Up To

In addition to Mr. Awesome having surgery over Christmas, YoungestMinion is having surgery next week for a torn meniscus. I’m really hopeful it brings her some relief as she’s been in pain for a long time. If anyone has any tips for how to keep her comfortable, I’d be so grateful.

But I’m also so excited to be doing some fabulous events that are coming up, including a couple later this month with my bestie, Eliza Knight. And I’m SO excited for the event in California this week!

This Christmas didn’t quite go the way we planned. Apparently, Santa decided to bring Mr. Awesome gallstones instead of coal…despite him being firmly on the Nice List. Rude.

After an unexpected ER visit on Christmas Eve, John ended up in the hospital and headed into surgery the day after Christmas to have his gallbladder out. We did our best to squeeze in a little holiday magic where we could with FaceTiming him while the girls opened their stockings and brought gifts to him, but then also did our own Christmas 2.0 once he was released from the hospital. But it really put everything into perspective in what truly mattered, which was him getting through surgery and coming home to recover.

I can’t say enough about the incredible staff at Baptist South, who took such wonderful care of him while working through the holidays. Being in a hospital on Christmas is never easy, but their kindness, skill, and compassion made all the difference. They truly are the real-life heroes of the season.

He’s home now and recovering as well as can be expected. It’ll be a limiting couple of weeks for him, but he’s already moving around and doing well.

Thank you to everyone who checked in, sent messages, and held us in your thoughts. Your kindness wrapped us in warmth during a week that could have felt frightening and overwhelming. We may have had a very unconventional Christmas this year, but it was still full of love—and in the end, that’s what matters most.

The Year in Review

As the year winds down, I love to look back and reflect on the last twelve months. 2025 was a year that felt both wildly full and deeply meaningful, woven together by stories, travel, creativity, and the people I love most.

One of the biggest creative highlights was traveling to England and Savannah to research A Time of Witches. Walking the streets of Bury St. Edmunds, standing in the places my characters will live in, and immersing myself in the history brought the story to life in a way nothing else could. After letting all that research settle, I came home and wrote the book in one intense, magical month, sharing the process along the way on my Instagram stories so readers could follow it as it unfolded. Sharing that experience with all of you was so magical and your cheering me on and support meant so much!

This was also the year I launched The Secret Book Society. What followed was an unforgettable six-week book tour that took me to so many wonderful bookstores and libraries, where I met readers who celebrated with me and made the book tour so special. The book became an instant USA Today bestseller and went on to be a finalist in the Goodreads Choice Awards for Favorite Historical Fiction, which felt especially meaningful as it was all decided by reader’s votes. I’m endlessly grateful to the booksellers, librarians, and readers who made this journey so special.

There was so much travel this year, too, not just for work, but for life. I went to Hawaii with YoungestMinion, finally visited Salem with Mr. Awesome (a lifelong dream of mine), and was lucky enough to attend a beautiful family reunion in Thailand. My family also squeezed in several Disney trips together, which is always extra special as OldestMinion usually shows up for those.

Creatively, I was surrounded by incredible women and powerful conversations. Writing retreats in the woods in Pennsylvania, with my Drexel MFA cohort, with my agent sisters in Las Vegas, and most recently in Orlando with dear friends filled my creative well again and again. I also had the joy of visiting the HarperCollins offices in both Toronto and New York City, moments that are just absolute dreams come true!

But the very best part of this year wasn’t a place or a milestone. It was how much of it I got to share with the people I love most. Family. Friends. Readers. And of course, the cats. From quiet mornings to big trips, from edits to celebrations, it all mattered because of who was there with me.

What’s Coming in 2026

As we step into 2026, I’m feeling equal parts excited, grateful, and a little in awe of everything waiting just ahead. There’s something so hopeful about the start of a new year, especially when it’s filled with stories, travel, and moments I can’t wait to share with all of you.

One of the things I’m most looking forward to is getting back out into the world to connect with readers. I have some wonderful events coming up, including one in California on January 8 and several in Florida, a few of them including Eliza Knight. Being in rooms filled with people who love books as much as I do is always one of the great joys of this job, and I’m already counting the days.

Upcoming Events

I’m also beyond excited for the reader trip I’ll be taking to Paris and Lisbon with Natasha Lester. Being able to revisit the places where we did so much of our research and walking those streets to share stories with readers feels incredibly special. Those cities hold so much history, beauty, and inspiration, and getting to experience them together is something I’ll treasure.

On the personal and creative side, 2026 also marks the year I’ll be graduating from my MFA program in Creative Writing with Drexel University. Balancing coursework, writing deadlines, book tours, and speaking engagements has been anything but easy, but it’s going to feel so meaningful to complete something I’ve worked so hard for. I’m proud of what that journey has already taught me, and I’m excited to see how it continues to shape my writing.

Of course, a huge part of the year ahead is the launch of A Time of Witches. I’ve poured so much heart, research, and soul into this story, and I can’t wait to share more with you, not just the book itself, but the behind-the-scenes process that brought it to life. This story has lived with me for a long time (for over 25 years!), and getting to finally release it into the world feels deeply meaningful.

And then there’s what comes next. I’m already deep into work on my 2027 release, and in early March I’ll be traveling with Mr. Awesome to begin the research that will shape that story. But more on that later ;)

I hope that 2026 is a year filled with joy, health, creativity, and beautiful moments for all of you. Thank you for being part of my world - I’m so excited to see what this next year brings for all of us.

I’ve officially turned in my edits for A Time of Witches, my travel is done for the rest of the year, and my quarter for my MFA program is wrapped up. I have a couple days of quiet ahead of me and am looking forward to reading some wonderful books, resting a bit, and spending unrushed time with my family.

Wrapping with Cats…

There is never a dull moment when wrapping presents in a house with cats. Crinkly paper must be attacked at all costs, Gunner’s affinity for tape means he’s constantly trying to eat it, and every gift on the floor creates an obstacle course for spying and surprise ambushes (pictured here moments before Gunner launched at Ink while she tore a bow off a completed gift).

They also somehow always manage to find their presents and steal them before I can wrap them. And let’s not even talk about what they do to the poor Christmas tree…

Still, this chaos is just part of our family’s holiday life, and I love it. LOL

Holiday Traditions

One of the things I cherish most about the holiday season is the traditions my family has built together over the years. One of our more recent favorites is going to the Merry Christmas Party at Disney, something so fun, even my oldest heads over from where she’s living now to join us. And with my youngest now a junior in high school, I’m aware that there are only a few more years left for traditions like this. That awareness makes every moment feel even more precious.

Another tradition I hold close is decorating the Christmas tree together. Almost all of our ornaments come from trips we’ve taken as a family, so trimming the tree is filled with memories of incredible experiences together. And then there’s our baking tradition: making kiflies, a crescent moon-shaped cookie passed down from my dad’s grandmother that has been made by every generation since. Both the girls know how to make them and now help, which is so appreciated because these cookies are a two-day process and a total labor of love. Here’s a pic of YoungestMinion helping me make kiflies from forever ago. Oh, how I cherish these pics and the sweet memories with them.

On Christmas Day, we have matching pajamas (I tried to do it one year and it was a total fail, but I still post this pic every year and have a laugh over it) (she will never forgive me). And our favorite gift is always the stocking,

I’m so grateful for all the amazing years of so many lovely memories. These traditions are the heartbeat of our Christmas, and I’m endlessly grateful for all of them.

The Last Bookshop in London

A Christmas Story

December 1, 1942

London England

Christmas would arrive soon and Grace had much to do to prepare.

She stared down at the careful list of names written on the back of an old order confirmation. One had to reuse what they could these days.

Her Christmas list for friends should have already been written out a month ago, the gifts purchased and neatly wrapped. But this marked the fourth Christmas since war broke out, and the first year without Mr. Evans. A hollow ache resonated in her chest made rallying a cheerful disposition somewhat difficult.

Many in England were in a similar mindset.

She’d heard as much from her patrons. Parents were missing children who had been evacuated and ones who had been sent to war; families were displaced and broken apart. They needed something to warm their spirits.

And a bookshop was the best place to make that happen.

Which was why she’d been preparing for the Christmas day celebration at the shop Mr. Evans had left to her, Primrose Hill Books. She scanned the preliminary plans that included her reading A Christmas Carolby Charles Dickens, a nativity play Jimmy was writing with Mrs. Weatherford’s assistance, and carols to be sung by Mrs. Nesbitt.

Grace had concerns about the latter, but was sure all would be well.

She hoped.

Anyway, she’d already accepted Mrs. Nesbitt’s offer and there was no going back.

Instead, Grace turned her attention to the list once more. There had to be just the right book for each person. Otherwise, she had entirely no business owning a bookshop.

She addressed the first name on her list and wrote the book in careful script.

Viv – Lady Chatterley’s Lover by D. H. Lawrence

It was a fortunate thing Grace owned her own bookshop and could easily procure a copy. Having to purchase the scandalous read from an employee somewhere else would have left her red as Santa’s coat.

Mrs. Weatherford – Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

If ever there was a book about the bonds of family, it was Little Women. And if ever there was a woman who could take strangers into her home and make them family, it was Mrs. Weatherford. Grace smiled, knowing full well how the book would warm Mrs. Weatherford’s heart.

George – A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

Truth be told, Grace didn’t need to add George to the list, but she liked seeing his name on the page alongside all those she loved. His gift had already been sent several weeks earlier to ensure its arrival by Christmas. One never knew how long the post would take to reach him. Wherever he was. There were too many censorship holes cut through his last correspondence to deduce any specific location.

Sarah – Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Mongomery

Sarah and Jimmy had been living with Mrs. Weatherford now for well over a year as her adopted children, making Grace’s former landlady a mother once more. Though Mrs. Weatherford loved both Jimmy and Sarah as any mother would, Sarah struggled with being an orphan, and confessed to Grace once that she wondered whether she might truly belong anywhere. It was Grace’s hope that Sarah would see how much Anne was loved by the Cuthberts and help her realize how well she fit into Mrs. Weatherford’s life and heart.

Jimmy – The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

Knowing how much the book had meant to George as a boy made it the perfect option for Jimmy who craved adventure and had become something of a voracious reader. Especially being such a large book, it might actually take a full week or longer to read. Maybe.

Mr. Stokes – Les Miserables by Victor Hugo

Mr. Stokes had come a long way from the disparaging ARP warden she’d been stuck patrolling the streets with and had become a dear friend. But that didn’t mean he still didn’t sometimes fall prey to his ready judgments. This book would remind him of the reasons people acted as they did, that even criminals had events in their lives made them who they were. And if nothing else, it would be an entertaining read.

Mrs. Nesbitt – First edition copy of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

It was terribly difficult to find just the right book for a woman who also owned a bookshop. But through various means, Grace knew the first edition of Mrs. Nesbitt’s favorite book would be the ideal present for the woman who had become a close friend.

As for Tabby, he would get the bits of wrapping and string to bat around and pounce upon after the presents were opened.

Grace leaned back, satisfied with the gifts she’d selected. Now she just had to prepare a list of what needed to be done before the Primrose Hill Books Christmas Program. Tapping the pencil against her lip, she considered. Jimmy and Sarah would likely enjoy decorating the shop. She could put them on a committee to do so.

A bell sounded at the door, interrupting her thoughts. The post woman stepped in, a smile on her face as she wished Grace a Happy Christmas and deposited several parcels and envelopes on the counter.

Thanking her, Grace began sorting through the stack, seeking out anything from George. There were none in the small pile of envelopes. Her shoulders fell slightly, as they always did when there was nothing in the post from him. She glanced at the parcels and immediately recognized the bold handwriting.

George.

The weight and shape of the item suggested a book was wrapped within. Already loving whatever it was, she hastily drew the brown paper off to see what lay beneath.

The book’s red cover soft with a velvet-like material and gold letters spelling out the words: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

She laughed in utter delight up on realizing they had given one another the exact same book for Christmas.

December 24, 1942
The night of the Christmas Program

Primrose Hill Books was prepared for a proper Christmas celebration despite the war. Grace rushed about the store, ensuring all was ready for the upcoming party.

“What do you think?” Jimmy nodded up at the various cheerful red and green paper chains festooned from one end of the second-floor railing to the other in all different directions so it resembled something like a giant Christmas cobweb.

It certainly added a pop of color. “It looks perfect.” Grace smiled at Jimmy and his sister, Sarah. “You’ve both done such a wonderful job.”

Sarah puffed out her small chest with pride. “I told you we’d be a good decoration committee.”

“And you were exactly right.”

“Now to put up the holly and evergreen.” Sarah hefted a bag from her side where white needles sprouted over the top. “If you dip them in Epsom salts, they look frosted!” She dug in the bag and held out a bit of holly, crystalized completely white by her efforts.

“How remarkable,” Grace exclaimed. “Those will be perfect scattered about the bookshelves.”

Sarah gave a serious nod. “That was precisely my thought.”

“I’ll take care of the places high up.” Jimmy ruffled Sarah’s dark hair. “Come on.”

Grace wished they might have had some food on hand for the attendees, but with rations in full effect, every food seemed in short supply. There were just as many homes empty as there were cupboards bare. Many loved ones were not home for the holidays. Some through an inability to take leave, like Grace’s beau, George. And others after having paid the ultimate price to keep England safe, like Mrs. Weatherford’s dear son, Colin. Or even those stolen before their time. Like Mr. Evans, the former owner of Primrose Hill books and whom Grace had begun to love like a father.

But for all the loss, there was celebration in those who could be there. Now that Viv was stationed in London as part of her role working with the anti-aircraft guns that helped keep London safe, she would be able to join them for Christmas. She wasn’t certain when her shift would end – the life of an Ack-Ack girl was prone to uncertainty – but she promised to eventually come.

The bell above the door chimed and Grace’s head snapped up, expecting to find Viv. The woman who entered the shop in a brown coat with her face buried in a mustard yellow scarf was decidedly not Viv. But she was the first to arrive to celebrate Christmas and share in a celebration of joy.

“Happy Christmas,” Grace said in welcome to the customer.

As the woman returned the gesture, the bell sounded again. And so it went, the bell ringing nonstop until the shop was filled with familiar faces. Meanwhile, the shelves became crowed with so many Epsom salt saturated foliage, one might have thought the entire store had been frosted over.

Grace’s heart filled as she regarded the patrons who had become like family to her. Mrs. Kittering whom Grace first met when the woman’s daughter was evacuated to the country, Jack and the men on his construction crew who had brought Primrose Hill Books back from the brink of ruin with their fast work to repair the bookshop after it was damaged in a bombing, and so, so many more. News of Grace reading books to patrons had spread through the shelters and the customers frequenting the small bookshop had nearly tripled. In a time when few people had extra to spare, that loyal patronage helped keep Primrose Hill Books in business.

“Thank you all so much for coming,” Grace called out.

Several people milling nearby glanced in her direction, but everyone else continued to talk, the sound cacophonous in the crowded space.

Jimmy dragged a chair over and nodded for Grace to step onto it. She did so and he gave a sharp whistle. The room went silent, every set of eyes turned to Grace.

She laughed. “Thank you, Jimmy. “

He winked.

“And thank you to Jimmy and Sarah for their lovely decorations,” she added.

The crowd cheered and Jimmy flushed while Sarah gave a gap-toothed grin.

“How did you make the holly look like that?” A woman asked. “Is it frost?”

“Epsom salts!” Sarah cried out with pleasure.

The crowd chuckled. When they quieted once more, Grace addressed the group. “Happy Christmas to all of you and thank you for coming tonight. I know Christmas is difficult in light of the war, but we’ve made such a lovely community here, I thought we might find comfort and happiness in spending time with one another.”

“Mr. Evans would be proud of you, Grace,” a man’s voice called from the back. One of Mr. Evans’ customers since the days before Grace ever took the job at Primrose Hill Books.

She put her hand over her heart, holding in all the warmth and love the man’s words created. “There really is no better way to celebrate than with all of you…and, of course, with a good book.” She lifted a copy of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Though she had her own copy procured a couple of years ago, she held the special one George had sent, as if by doing so, he was joining in the special reading with her.

The crowd cheered.

“I’ll read halfway through, then we’ll have a special Christmas program as intermission.” She looked at Jimmy and Sarah who nodded confidently from where they stood beside Mr. Stokes. “Then after I’ve read the second half, we’ll have some music by our very own Mrs. Nesbitt.”

The slender woman who was once a rival bookseller raised her hand in acknowledgment.

Grace settled on the last stair of the spiral staircase and opened the book, pausing only briefly at the inscription from George. Not that she hadn’t read it yet. She had read it so many times that she’d scored the words on her heart.

Though we may not be together in London this Christmas, we can both read this story and be together in literature. Happy Christmas, my beautiful Grace.

She turned the page and began to read. Though it was a tale she’d read many times before, she found herself riveted and the halfway point of the story came upon them far too quickly.

The intermission was entirely worth the wait, with Jimmy and Sarah playing Joseph and Mary in search of a place to rest for the night and Mr. Stokes playing the inn keeper.

The acting was overdone, most especially by Mr. Stokes who relished the role with an excitement Grace hadn’t expected. Throughout the performance, Jimmy’s mustache was crooked and Sarah’s ‘baby’ – a stuffed pillow – continued to fall out from beneath her dress. By the time the play was over, everyone’s cheeks ached from smiling and laughing. It was a tough act to follow.

Fortunately, Dickens always delivered. Grace read through the remainder of the story, doing her level best to do right by the tale. When she was done, the crowd reacted in glorious applause.

Through it all, Viv had not come.

Grace hated to let anything dampen the high spirit of the group, so she put aside her own sadness and set the book from George behind the counter. “And now Mrs. Nesbitt will sing some carols.”

The slender woman approached the center of the room and Grace’s stomach twisted slightly with nerves. Mrs. Nesbitt had offered, citing her vocal skill as passable after the choir she’d been in as a girl. The woman did not offer much in the way of warmth, though Grace had long since broken through her prickly exterior to the kind woman beneath. Grace also knew this was Mrs. Nesbitt’s way of doing her part for the community.

“Perhaps we shall begin with songs we are all familiar with,” Mrs. Nesbitt said. “And in honor of the delightful performance by Jimmy, Sarah, and Mr. Stokes.” The three bowed as Mrs. Nesbitt began the opening notes of Away in a Manger.

As it turned out, Mrs. Nesbitt had lied about her voice.

Her ability to sing was a far cry from passable. It was excellent.

Everyone joined into the familiar tune and they passed the next half hour singing together songs that spoke of happier times in London when the city had been whole and their families had been together.

For her last number, Mrs. Nesbitt sang White Christmas, Bing Crosby’s newest song that had taken the world by storm. Her performance was so exemplary that those joining her quieted until it was only her voice rising out like a bell in the silence. As she sang about white Christmases and sleigh bells and all the fond memories of the holiday, the rest of them were transported back to a time when life was simple and families were whole.

People left with warm embraces and effusive gratitude for the effort Grace and her friends had put into the celebration.

Still, Viv had not shown. Before locking up shop for the night, Grace put a note on the door letting Viv know she’d left for Mrs. Weatherford’s as both Grace and Viv planned to sleep there that night to ensure they’d be present for the excitement on Christmas morning.

Grace pulled her torch from her purse, a necessary tool with which to navigate the blackout, and let the weak stream of light from the hooded cover guide her to the place that had once been her home.

Snow hadn’t begun to fall, though it was certainly was cold enough. Grace’s breath froze in a cloud in front of her and she had stopped feeling her toes the minute she left the bookshop. While she didn’t always enjoy snow, she certainly hoped there would be a white Christmas for them all.

There was something altogether magical about the way it sifted over the world while they slept, leaving a downy white blanketing everything in the morning like confectioners’ sugar.

But whatever was chilled in Grace immediately warmed at the sight of the familiar townhouse on Britton Street. After all, once someplace was home, it really never stopped holding that special place in one’s heart.

And Mrs. Weatherford’s house never felt anything less with its familiar faded carpet and the underlying note of carbolic in a house so tidy and spotless, it practically shone. Grace entered without knocking and toed off her shoes. “Hello,” she called out as she peered around the corner to the empty parlor.

“In the kitchen.” There was a thickness to Mrs. Weatherford’s tone, a wobble of emotion.

She was crying.

Alarm pricked Grace and sent her rushing into the kitchen where Sarah and Jimmy crouched on either side of a sobbing Mrs. Weatherford.

“What’s happened?” Grace gripped her own neck as if she could keep the terror from crawling up her throat. “Viv?”

Mrs. Weatherford waved a wadded handkerchief in the air. “Nothing at all like that, thank heavens. It’s this...” She jerked the handkerchief toward a serving platter with a pale, rounded blob atop it.

Grace exhaled slowly, trying to shake off the bolt of fear that jarred her system. “What is it?”

“Po-turkey,” Jimmy replied in a matter-of-fact tone. Tabby lay nestled in his skinny arms like a baby, eyes closing drowsily.

“Po…what?”

“Po-turkey,” Sarah repeated brightly. “A potato turkey. Jimmy came up with the name.” Her proud grin was so wide, it revealed a few gaps where two teeth had been lost and another was partly grown in. “You mash up a whole lot of potatoes and then you squish ‘em into the shape of a turkey.” She shrugged in delight. “A po-turkey.”

“It appears I’m not much of a sculptor.” Mrs. Weatherford miserably eyed her creation. “The butcher said he couldn’t promise a goose, but swore he’d be able to fetch me a turkey for Christmas, and he did…”

“Had it gone bad?” Grace asked with a grimace. There had been too many reports these days, with the ration so fierce, that some butchers sold meat past its prime to anyone desperate enough to still attempt to find it edible.

“Nothing like that.” Mrs. Weatherford sniffed and dabbed her eyes with the wadded handkerchief. “It was a mite small, but still a fine, plump thing.”

Grace shook her head in confusion as to what had become of the turkey.

Jimmy focused his attention on petting Tabby who eagerly tilted his head back for chin scratches. “The orphanage didn’t have a turkey.”

“And now they’ve got one.” Mrs. Weatherford sniffed and wiped at her eyes. “One that is a mite small, but still a fine, plump thing that can feed a good number of children. And I’d heard about the potato turkey…” She looked at Jimmy with a nod. “A po-turkey. And I thought, surely I can do that and no one would miss the turkey.”

Sarah put a hand on Mrs. Weatherford’s arm. “The children will be so happy to have that when they’ve lost so much.”

Mrs. Weatherford covered the girl’s small hand with her own and smiled through her tears. “And that brings me joy, my dear. But I will say my hopes for making a po-turkey instead are rather dashed. This is a miserable presentation. I’m afraid I’ve ruined Christmas.”

“Oh, come now, Christmas is not ruined.” Grace stepped closer to the table. “It doesn’t look all that bad. It looks…” She hesitated. Because it did look all that bad. Like a fat loaf of bread that had been skinned of its crust and coated with lumpy potato mash. “It looks…”

“Awful,” Sarah finished for her.

Mrs. Weatherford snuffled into her handkerchief. “It’s a poor show for Christmas dinner tomorrow.”

“All that matters is that we have each other, that we’re together.” Grace abandoned the po-turkey to embrace Mrs. Weatherford, Jimmy, and Sarah all in one great hug, as awkward as it was perfectly wonderful. “This is a time to celebrate being with family and friends, of enjoying the warmth of our homes when it is so very cold outside, of being grateful for what we do have when so many in the world have far less.” She squeezed Mrs. Weatherford’s shoulder. “And sacrificing for those who have less.”

Mrs. Weatherford gave a watery smile.

“Let’s wait until Viv is here,” Grace said. “She always manages in a scrape. I’ll wager she’ll have this looking like a turkey in no time and you won’t even believe it ever had a single potato in it.”

As if on cue, the front door swung open with a gusto that announced Viv even before she could call out in a singsong voice. “Happy Christmas, darlings!” This was followed by the accompanying thunk, thunk, of her shoes being kicked off and the slam of the door.

“We’re in the kitchen,” Grace called cheerfully. “And in dire need of help.”

“I’m so sorry to be late.” Viv sauntered in, bright-cheeked from the cold and glowing with merriment. Flecks of snow dotted her red curls.

“Is it snowing?” Grace asked excitedly.

“It is.” Viv shook her hair where the snowflakes had melted to glinting water droplets. “It looks like we’ll have a white Christmas after all.” She set the sack she carried on the table with a heavy thump and unwound her scarf. “I’m truly so sorry to have missed the Christmas program. I’m sure it was a delight. But when you hear why I was late—” Her gaze fell on the po-turkey. “Heavens, what is that?”

“Po-turkey,” Sarah cried with delight.

Tabby jumped from Jimmy’s arms and curled around Viv’s ankles, earning him a stroke along his striped sides.

“We don’t have a turkey,” Mrs. Weatherford said mournfully. “And I’m afraid I’m a rather poor sculptor.”

“We thought you might be able to fix it,” Grace added hopefully.

“Absolutely.” Viv straightened from where she patted Tabby and jabbed a red-nailed finger at the po-turkey. “Scoop those potatoes up and put them into a serving bowl like they belong.”

Jimmy’s mouth fell open and he stammered, “B…but Mrs. Weatherford worked so hard on this.”

“Well, we don’t need a po-turkey, when we have a real turkey.” Viv pulled the sack she’d carried in toward her and lowered the fabric to reveal a large, juicy turkey. “Ready to pop in the oven on Christmas morning. And it will pair very well with all those potatoes.”

“Viv,” Mrs. Weatherford exclaimed. “What? How?”

Viv gave a cheeky grin. “I may have found an American soldier ready to swap a turkey for a date.”

Sarah gazed up at Viv with wide eyes. “But now he won’t have a turkey.”

“I said the very same thing,” Viv answered with sincerity. “And he assured me the mess where he eats promised them all a hot turkey dinner.” She glanced up at Grace. “And before you say anything, Grace Bennett, yes, I would have agreed to a date with him without the turkey.”

Grace chuckled at her friend’s pre-emptive answer. After all, the last thing Grace wanted was Viv to be stuck on a date with someone she didn’t like, all for the sake of them having a turkey on Christmas day. Grace ought to have known better.

No one made Viv do anything she didn’t want to.

“Bless you, Viv.” Mrs. Weatherford pushed up from her chair and embraced Viv. “You’ve saved Christmas. Now let’s put them both in the larder so they’ll be ready to prepare for tomorrow.”

“In the meantime, might a Christmas hero be awarded a personal showing of the nativity play?” Viv smoothed Sarah’s silky hair. “I heard you both did a smashing job.”

“Grace, will you play the part of the stable owner?” Sarah asked. “But you have to be grumpy like Mr. Stokes.”

Grace laughed. “I think I can do that.” She jerked her thumb toward the parlor and used her best Mr. Stokes-on-duty voice. “Now get in there to prepare before I write you a citation.”

Jimmy and Sarah squealed with glee and raced off to put together a set for the recreation of their play. Mrs. Weatherford followed at their behest, likely to figure out how to fashion her throw pillows into a pregnant belly and what on earth might pass for a sufficient mustache.

“I really am so sorry to have missed your Christmas Program, Ducky.” Viv pulled Grace in for a hug as she used Grace’s mother’s nickname for her.

“I’m just glad you’re here now. Besides, you did save Christmas if Mrs. Weatherford has anything to say about it.”

“Doing so was entirely my pleasure.” Vivienne gave a wide, suggestive grin.

Grace nudged her friend. “Was it now? I think I need to learn more about this mysterious American.”

Viv laughed, a sure sign that there was so much more to the story than had been told. “Maybe we can talk Mrs. Weatherford into inviting him tomorrow and you can all meet Brian.”

“Brian?”

A telltale flush turned Viv’s cheeks as scarlet as her nails.

“Oh, this must be good if you are blushing at his name.” Grace grinned. “I’m sure Mrs. Weatherford can be convinced.”

“We’re ready,” a voice called from the parlor.

Grace looped her arm with Viv’s and together they left the miserable po-turkey behind, prepared for one last showing of the Nativity Scene where a black comb pinched between Jimmy’s nose and lips became a hilarious mustache and a lazy tabby cat made a surprisingly good baby Jesus.

Though times had been dark, though they had been difficult, there was still joy to be had and a community to cherish. For there would always be good books, great friends, and plenty of room for a love story.

I’m so excited to share that I’ll be heading back to Indiana this Thursday (December 11 at 2PM) for a special author chat at the Carmel Clay Public Library as part of their Behind the Book series. Carmel Clay has become one of my very favorite libraries to visit over the years. The readers and staff there are endlessly warm, welcoming, and wonderfully engaged.

I’m especially looking forward to seeing familiar faces from past visits and meeting new readers who’ve discovered my books since the last time I was in town. These events always remind me why I love what I do: the conversations, the shared enthusiasm for stories, and the chance to connect with people who bring books to life with their passion.

What I Read in November

November was such a fantastic reading month with a great mix of genres!

Here’s everything I read—and a little something wonderful about each.

-The Hope Keeper by Heather Webb - A glittering, glamorous historical mystery rich with suspense, fascinating jewel lore, and a heroine you can’t help but root for. Coming May 2026 - you’ll definitely want to pre-order this one!

-Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë - A brooding, wild, unforgettable classic. I am SO, SO excited for this movie to come out!

-The Austen Affair by Madeline Bell - A charming, clever contemporary story with plenty of romance, wit, and Austen-inspired delight—read as part of my Once Upon a Book Club subscription box.

-Final Girls by Riley Sager - A sharp, clever take on the “final girl” trope that had me flying through this audiobook.

-Lark Ascending by Silas House - A gorgeously written dystopian journey filled with hope, survival, and tenderness. There’s a dog you’ll fall in love with too <3 Perfect for animal lovers.

-Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham - Funny, heartfelt, and full of Gilmore Girls nostalgia.

-Trust by Hernan Diaz - A layered literary novel about wealth, power, and perception that is something of a book within a book within a book.

-The Fortune Tellers of Rue Daru by Olesya Salnikova Gilmore - Magical, atmospheric, and steeped in rich folklore, this novel transports you into a Paris brimming with enchantment and fate. This spooky horror novel comes out March 2026!

-The Merge by Grace Walker - A thought-provoking dystopian novel about people merging with one another save space.

-I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman - A Haunting, powerful, and beautifully written dystopian classic. I’d heard of this one for ages and finally read it - I’m so glad I did! It is an especially poignant story when you learn more about the author’s life and what she lived through.

What I’m Up To

This week has been an absolute gift. I’ve been on an incredible writing retreat with some of my closest friends (Eliza Knight, Heather Webb, Sarah Penner, Cecelia Mecca, Julie Johnstone, E. Elizabeth Watson, Lori Ann Bailey, Brenna Ash, and Heather McCollum), and my days have been completely immersed in edits for A Time of Witches. I’m thrilled with how the story is taking shape—the clarity, the depth, the magic of watching everything lock into place. I also posted a picture of my writing desk on Instagram if you’re curious about my setup.

When I travel to write, I always bring my essentials: my laptop, a gorgeous notebook and sparkly pens, my trusty coffee warmer, my Christmas Corkcicle tumbler, my ergonomic mousepad, chapstick, and earbuds. Having these little comforts helps me lock into what I’m working on.

This retreat has been such a recharge. It’s been wonderful seeing everyone for our annual gathering, and we are always so overjoyed when Kristin Harmel joins us for dinner one night—our sparkly night—which is always one of the highlights of the trip. We also do a gift exchange every year, and it’s become one of my favorite traditions. There’s nothing like the combination of heartfelt gifts, shared laughter, and the joy of spending time with women who inspire me so deeply.

Then there’s the trip to Epcot where we get to blow off a little steam after a week of hard work. That was yesterday and we had such a blast checking out all the holiday traditions around the world and sampling food and drinks from the different countries - so fun!

It’s been a beautiful week of creativity, friendship, and filling the well. I’m heading home with a full heart and so much excitement for what’s coming next.

A Time of Witches Update!

I’m absolutely thrilled to share that A Time of Witches officially has a release date: September 1, 2026. YAY!!! When I was in the HarperCollins office in New York recently, I had the chance to hold the first bound galley in my hands, and it was one of those moments that makes all the late nights, tangled plot threads, and emotional chapters feel so worth it. Seeing this story become real in that way filled me with so much joy, and I’m excited to get to share that moment with you sooner than later.

I just got my edits, so I have to tackle those first! LOL

I’m including a picture of my little “research tower”—a mini bookshelf packed with all the books I used to build this world and its magic. It’s my way of keeping track of the sources I lean on for each project, and this one is stacked full of 17th-century witch trials, English folklore, healing practices, ancestral magic, Savannah history, English history, and more. (And yes… I’ll be clearing it out soon to start filling it with research for a brand-new book idea—but more on that later.)

A Time of Witches follows Lilith in modern-day Savannah and Sybil in 1645 England as their lives become bound together by a curse that binds them women in a fierce determination to save one another across time. It’s a story about inherited magic, survival, sisterhood, and reclaiming power in a world determined to take it. And I’m so happy to say that the book is officially available for pre-order now (through some vendors with more coming).

What I’m Up To

I’ve started a new journaling project lately, and it’s already becoming one of my favorite parts of the day. For the next 100 days, I’m committing to writing about what I see through my window. No matter where I am - sometimes the same view with a new perspective, other times, a view from anywhere in the world I’m at. I’m exploring how weather, mood, and time of day transform the same scene into something completely new.

This is a creative exercise in presence and observation to help me slow down a little, remain present no matter where I am, and flex myself creatively. I want to see the world through a lens of wonder and detail.

On top of that, I just received my edits for A Time of Witches from my publisher, so I’m officially diving into full revision mode. It’s always a mix of excitement and nerves, but I genuinely love the puzzle-solving part of making a story stronger. I also have a top secret project I’m working on, and yes, I’ve already started digging into the research and early brainstorming for my 2027 book. The research tower will be getting a full swap out very soon!

But for now, I’m stepping back for a few days to spend time with my family for the holiday. I hope you all have an amazing Thanksgiving filled with warmth, joy, good food, and the people you love most. I’m grateful for every one of you who reads these posts and shares this creative journey with me.

Now, for a little personal update…I’m writing this from New York City, where I’m currently attending my MFA residency in Creative Writing with Drexel University. It’s been an inspiring, joy-filled week surrounded by my incredible cohort of writers. Their creativity, generosity, and brilliance have reminded me why I fell in love with storytelling in the first place.

I’ll be sharing more soon about what the residency has been like and all the inspiration I’m taking home with me, but I couldn’t wait another moment to share this exciting news.

I’ve just returned from one of the most incredible trips in a family reunion in Thailand.

Bangkok

The bustle of Bangkok is such a vibrant city that hums at all hours of the day and night — which means we found some absolutely unforgettable bars. One especially memorable one was entirely themed around honey in its cocktails. I ordered my drink served in a mug made out of beeswax with a warning: don’t bite it or you’ll be charged 1,000 baht (about $30). Well. Of course we all wanted to bite it after the, but resisted regardless. LOL

We wandered through parks filled with stray cats who happily lounged in the middle of running paths as joggers maneuvered around them and people stopping to pet them and give them the attention they so richly deserve. It was adorable! The tuktuk rides were another highlight: all of us piled in, holding on as our driver zoomed through narrow lanes, and one ride even turned up the music for my niece and nephew and we all danced.

One of the things I loved about Bangkok was how pedestrian-friendly the city felt in certain areas: wide elevated sidewalks built over the streets made walking easy and led directly to these massive malls where multiple layers have stores for anything you could possibly want. Even several bookstores where I spotted my book in a few of them! Both English and Thai editions — it was such a cool surreal moment!

Chiang Mai

We then flew north to the tranquil and beautiful city of Chiang Mai. We visited a stunning temple with golden rooftops, and wandered through its quiet courtyards. At night we dove into the night market, where aromatic street-food stalls offered delicious dishes at shockingly inexpensive prices. One standout was the local dish Khao Soi — a rich northern Thai curry-noodle soup made with egg noodles, a creamy coconut-milk broth with protein (I got chicken), topped with crunchy fried noodles and pickled mustard greens. YUM!

And then — the massages. Massage parlors were everywhere! We found a spot where our foot-wash preceded an amazing Thai massage, and at the end we were served a cup of fragrant tea and a semi-sweet rice cookie. It was so incredible and relaxing - just an amazing experience and only about 500 baht for an hour, which equates to about $15 USD!

Phuket

Finally, I travelled with my brother and sister-in-law to Phuket — only a day and a half, but enough to feel like a dreamy escape. Every beach we walked felt like something out of a postcard. We island-hopped, strolled the sand at sunrise, went for a horseback ride along the shoreline, and yes — indulged in several tropical cocktails (because, why not?). One stop was the actual beach where the movie The Beach was filmed: crystal clear water, white sand that felt like talcum powder underfoot, gentle waves - just stunning.

The Food

I ate so many unforgettable dishes — in particular Som Tam, green papaya salad, with shredded unripe papaya tossed with garlic, fresh chilies, roasted peanuts, and long beans in a tangy, spicy dressing. And mango sticky rice: sweet, ripe mango slices over sticky rice topped with a sweet coconut cream drizzle — simple, perfect, and deeply satisfying. My mouth is watering even as I write this. LOL

Culture & Connection

One of the deeper parts of the trip was the opportunity to experience a little more of the Thai culture. Elephants — revered creatures in Thailand — show up not just in tourist experiences but in art, in temples, in stories. Their presence reminded me of the country’s deep connection to nature, to spiritual traditions, and how that blends into the modern world.

But honestly — the best part of this trip was not just the places, the temples, the beaches, or the food. It was that I got to share it with my brothers, their families, and my parents. Laughter in tuktuks, quiet moments in temples, collective awe at the beach at sunset, being ‘forced’ by my brothers to stay for ‘just one more drink’ — these are the memories that will outlast any photo.

This was a trip I’ll remember for the rest of my life and I could not be more grateful for the opportunity to have gone.

What I’m Up To

First of all, I have officially gotten approval for my 2027 book idea, so I’ll be sharing that in my next newsletter as well as the details on where I’ll be going for my next research trip for it.

Next week, I’ll be in NYC for a residency with my MFA Creative Writing program with Drexel University.

And I’ll be sharing my wrap up of what I read in October - it was an amazing month for books!

This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that combines travel, history, and storytelling — and it’s based on the cities where Natasha and I both did research for our novels. With all the driving I did over the last month during my book tour, I got in a LOT of books and they were all fabulous! Here is the list and a little about each:

First Wife’s Shadow by Adele Parks – This was such a fabulous psychological thriller about a woman whose tight control on her life unravels when she falls in love with a man who might not be very good for her.

Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn – When retired female assassins become the mark, they reunite to survive and find out who double crossed them…and why.

The Lies They Told by Ellen Marie Wiseman – This was such a powerful historical fiction about eugenics and immigrants and the people in the Appalachian Mountains.

All the Colors of the Dark by Christ Whitaker – A thriller with an unsolved mystery that extends for decades while following the lives of two close friends.

The Glass Key by Amanda Geard – An Advanced Reader Copy - Family secrets and an evocative setting in Norway in a story that has so much heart.

The Bane Witch by Ava Morgyn – Female witches who eat poison plants to kill men who would do them harm – this was such a fascinating concept!

I Found You by Lisa Jewell – An age-old murder, a man with no memory, and everything you think you might know gets flipped on its head in this fabulous thriller by Lisa Jewell

The Sisters of Book Row by Shelley Noble – An Advanced Reader Copy - This story centers on book banning in the early 1900s America and the women who fight back to protect the book community.

Tell Them You Lied by Laura Leffler – Best friends in college and are the ultimate frenemies in this book following two timelines, one in art school where the girls meet and then later after 9-11 when one is missing. Twisty, evocative, and lush with artistic prose.

The Honeycrisp Orchard Inn by Valerie Bowman – OMG this book! This was the ultimate fall read with a grumpy hero, a heroine temporarily living in the country after her job in the city didn’t pan out well, and there’s a pug named Pumpkin you will absolutely fall in love with! Like a Hallmark movie, but with some spice and a seriously hot hero

What I’ve Been Up To

After six amazing weeks on the road, I’m officially home again—just for a couple of days. I’m already repacking my suitcase for the next adventure!

My book tour for The Secret Book Society has officially wrapped, and I’m still processing what an extraordinary experience it’s been. Six weeks of connecting with readers, meeting so many wonderful booksellers, sharing stories, and celebrating books—it’s the kind of joy that fills your heart (and your suitcase with too many bookmarks!).

I can’t even begin to express how grateful I am for everyone who came out to the events, asked thoughtful questions, shared hugs, and made each stop feel so special. The warmth, laughter, and connection I’ve felt at every event is a constant reminder of why I love what I do.

Yesterday was so exciting! I had the chance to be on First Coast News for their First Coast Living segment, which was such a fun way to cap off this tour! It was so nice catching up with some of the crew from when I was last there and seeing their beautiful new set. It’s always a little surreal to be sitting under the studio lights chatting about my books, but it’s also one of those pinch-me moments that I’ll never forget.

And now… I’m packing my bags again—this time for Thailand! I’ll be meeting up with some family there, and I can’t wait to soak up the culture, the history, and (of course) the food. What I’ve Been Up To

This week I’ve been staying with my parents while I’m in Georgia doing events. It has been SO wonderful getting my parents all to myself. Every day I’ve gone out for such lovely walks with my mom and both parents have been spoiling so much from my dad putting air in my tires before long drives and cooking amazing meals to my mom washing my clothes for me while I’m at events and even staying up past midnight to wait for me after a long drive home from Alabama one night. I don’t know what I’m going to do when I go back home and my family needs me to do those things for them! LOL! But it’s been so wonderful and I’m cherishing this one-on-one time with them both. <3

In the meantime, homework is amping up with my MFA Creative Writing program and I have a lot of homework to tackle this week. It’s been fun though because I’m delving into my new book idea for my 2027 release. I haven’t heard back from my editor on her take on the concept, but I’m using the characters and story already in my homework to start to get know the characters a little more.

I’ll be heading up to NC tomorrow for a couple of days with Katherine Scott Crawford where I’ll be staying with her and doing a couple of fabulous events with her (above). I’m so looking forward to it! :) If you’re in the area, I hope to see you there!

The Margaret Mitchell House

This past week, I had the honor of speaking at the Margaret Mitchell House in Atlanta, hosted by the Atlanta History Company. To make the evening even better, I was in conversation with the fabulous Colleen Oakley. It was my first time getting to meet her, and she was just a delight. She’s not only warm and funny, but she’s such a gifted storyteller.

Afterward, the chance to explore the Margaret Mitchell House was an experience I’ll never forget. From the outside, the building looks so big…until you realize it once held sixteen separate apartments. Margaret Mitchell’s was just 600 square feet, which she dubbed ‘The Dump’.

I loved it all! The small desk where she wrote Gone with the Wind, complete with a replica of the typewriter she used, and even the clipboard where she kept her notes. There was a shelf filled with her research books that thrilled my inner historical researcher. I also learned that she famously wrote the novel backwards, hiding completed chapters in different spots throughout her apartment.

But my favorite detail was about her editor at Macmillan, who had to carry the manuscript home. With a book that runs well over a thousand pages, the typed manuscript was no small stack of paper. He ended up buying an entire suitcase just to transport it safely. And yes—the museum has that very suitcase on display! The story gets even better: after he’d taken it, Margaret Mitchell sent word that she’d changed her mind and wanted the manuscript back. LOL (he said no)

As special as all of this was, what truly made the night unforgettable was having my parents in the audience. This was the first time they’ve ever been able to attend one of my author events, and having their support in that room meant the world to me. I got choked up and had to try so hard not to cry LOL!! They’ve always been so proud and encouraging, and to share such a lovely evening with them was an absolute gift.

I’m deeply grateful to the Atlanta History Company for hosting, to Colleen Oakley for being such a joy to chat with, and to all the readers who came out that evening. Nights like this are a reminder of why I love what I do—books, history, friendship, family, and connection all woven together in the most meaningful way.

One of my favorite things about connecting with readers is joining book clubs for chats, and I’ve already been booking quite a few Zoom visits for The Secret Book Society as well as my earlier books. Southern Soirée at Amelia Island

I’m so excited to announce that I’ll be participating in Amelia Island Book Festival’s 25th anniversary Fall Literacy Luncheon with Martha Hall Kelly on November 15th.

Proceeds go to helping fund literacy programs with the Amelia Island Book Festival for the community.

I’m so looking forward to this! Supporting literacy programs is something I’m incredibly passionate about and I love Amelia Island. I also have only met Martha online and am looking forward to getting to meet in person - it’s always so fun to finally connect with people we’ve only had a chance to interact with online.

That Wonderful Moment…

Last week, while I was at The BookMark for an event with the wonderful Sheila Athens, a very special moment happened.

After our chat, a teenager came up to me, shy but smiling, and told me how much she loved my books. Her mother added that I was actually her absolute favorite author.

It turns out this young woman hadn’t been much of a reader before. But one day, she picked up The Keeper of Hidden Books. From there, she devoured all my other novels. When she reached the end of my list, she didn’t stop—she kept right on reading and is now a huge reader.

As authors, we always hope that our words might make a difference in someone’s life, that the stories we write might touch hearts and leave an indelible mark. But seeing it happen—hearing it from a young woman who discovered a love of reading through one of my books—that is something truly special.

Moments like these are why the long hours of writing, the editing, and even the chaotic travel of book tours are worth every single moment. Getting to connect with readers, to hear your stories, and to witness how books can change lives—this is the heart of what keeps me going.

I’m so grateful for that young reader, for her mom, and for all of you who share your own stories with me. Books have the power to connect us, to open doors we never imagined. I’m honored beyond words to play even the smallest role in that journey.

What I’ve Been Up To

I’ve been doing local events this past week, which means I’ve bene home. That also means I’ve also had the joy of sleeping in my own bed (the little luxuries, right?), snuggling with the cats, and even spending a couple of days with my college daughter. My mama heart is full.

Of course, no rest for the weary—my MFA Creative Writing program with Drexel University has started back up again. All that homework and school work means busy just got busier. I’m laughing and crying at the same time as I juggle book tour events, writing deadlines, and school assignments. Send caffeine.

On the travel prep front: I’ve been checking vaccinations off my list for my upcoming trip to Thailand—encephalitis and typhoid, check! The countdown is on, and I can’t wait to share more about that adventure soon.

Tomorrow, I’ll be heading to Happy Medium Café for an event, then driving straight to Georgia to stay with my parents for a week while I continue that leg of my book tour. I’m so excited to have time with them in the middle of all the busy—it feels like such a gift. I know I’m a grown woman, but I love my one-on-one time with my parents.

And here’s a little tease: I’ve officially submitted my proposal to my publisher for my 2027 book. I’m practically bursting to tell you all about it, but my lips are sealed until I get the green light to share. Just know…I’m really excited about this one.

All in all, life has been full, busy, sometimes a little chaotic, but mostly just incredibly rewarding. I’m so grateful for so many amazing readers, for the booksellers, for my family, for my writing community, and for every single one of you who continues to cheer me on this journey.

I’m home for a week and a half to do several events for my book tour for The Secret Book Society in Jacksonville and after over three weeks on the road, it’s so nice to sleep in my own bed and snuggle with the cats. Last night was my local neighborhood book club (we read All the Colors of the Dark by Christ Whitaker, which we all really enjoyed).

Classes for my MFA in creative writing start up next week, so I’m basking in the joy of no homework while I can. So right now is all about relaxing and spending some time with my family. I even booked a spa day for myself today as I had some sessions built up with my membership at a local spa, so I am looking forward to a relaxing massage and facial later on today. :)

I also was able to be home for Gunner’s birthday!

He’s such a cuddly little guy that makes every day brighter—especially since he insists on joining me for nap time (he’s the best nap partner ever). He’s also got the cutest little notch in his tail that curls into the perfect curlicue whenever he sits—his signature flourish!

I spoiled him absolutely rotten with all the love, snuggles, and as much wet food as his little heart desired.

Fun little fact about Gunner: He inspired the cat that you’ll meet in my Fall 2026 release, A Time of Witches (about the witch trials in England in the 1600s).

The Blue Pill & Other Perils: Dangerous Medicine in the Victorian Era

In The Secret Book Society, Lady Duxbury has a large book of herbal cures. There’s a reason for that – Victorian medicine was dangerous. In fact, it could be deadly!

One of the most widely prescribed medicines of the 19th century was the blue pill. Innocent sound and a ‘cure all’, it was sold at nearly every chemist in Britain and used for everything from constipation to "melancholia" and general malaise.

The main ingredients? Honey or licorice for binding, a touch of rose oil for elegance, and...mercury.

Yes, mercury. That toxic metal used in thermometers and banned in modern cosmetics. Prolonged use of blue pills caused classic symptoms of mercury poisoning: tremors, memory loss, excessive salivation, gum disease, and, in some cases, death. Even Charles Darwin used blue pills, possibly exacerbating his mysterious chronic illness.

Then there was arsenic for glowing skin…

Women were encouraged to take arsenic wafers to maintain a pale, luminous complexion. These tiny white pills promised to brighten the eyes, clear the skin and sweeten the breath. And they did work – temporarily. Arsenic made the skin appear clear and pale by thinning blood vessels. But over time, it also caused hair loss, kidney damage, and organ failure.

Then there’s cocaine…

By the mid-to-late 19th century, cocaine was the medical darling. Sold in over-the-counter toothache drops and throat lozenges, it was even marketed to children. Sigmund Freud promoted it as a wonder drug, and physicians used it liberally in tonics for everything from fatigue to hysteria.

Brands like “Vin Mariani” (a wine fortified with cocaine) were endorsed by celebrities and royalty alike—including Pope Leo XIII.

In The Secret Book Society, I briefly mentioned the medicines that were taken, but it’s absolutely something fascinating and worth exploring in more depth, hence this article. That fine line between medicine and unintentional self-poisoning is one of the many things that intrigued me about the Victorian era and there is so, so many more for future newsletters to come!

Books Read in August

August was an amazing month for reading between taking some down time in Hawaii with YoungestMinion (and discovering pool reading!) and all the travel I'm doing on my book tour. Here's what I read:

- The Teacher Freida Mcfadden - a twisty thriller about two teachers who are married, the student who might come between them…and a murder.
- These Memories Do Not Belong to Us by Yiming Ma - a fascinating dystopian composed of vignette-esque type of stories of memories that all tie back to one another. This audiobook was fabulous with so many different narrators who all did such a great job!
- Close Your Eyes and Count to 10 by Lisa Unger - a reality show with the ultimate hide-and-seek game for a million dollars, only the old hotel is crumbling to pieces and a perilous storm is wreaking havoc on the remote island.
- Commune: Book One by Joshua Gayou - a fabulous dystopian about the world ending and a few good men who are trying to make the world a better place - loved this one!
- The Compound by Aisling Rawle - a reality show set in a dystopian future that is basically like being in the head of a woman from Love Island
- The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown - when books in a secret library hold special abilities, including traveling anywhere you want to go…through a book
- The Girl in His Shadows by Audrey Blake - a woman in the Victorian era is raised by a doctor and becomes a surgeon herself, one who cannot publicly practice despite her incredible talent.
- Someone We Know by Shari Lapena - a son’s break-ins with a few neighbor’s homes becomes even more horrifying when a woman from one of those homes is found murdered.
- The Five Year Lie by Sarina Bowen - Ariel thought the love of her life, and father of her child, was dead…until she receives a text from him five years later - and it seems like he’s in danger.
- Hungerstone by Kat Dunn - a gorgeously written Victorian gothic about a twist on the story, Carmilla
- We are All Guilty Here by Karin Slaughter - the murder of a friend’s daughter has haunted Emmy for years and becomes even more terrifying when the murders begin again suggesting they had the wrong man…
- Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V. E. Schwab - a sensually-written sapphic story about vampires whose lives become entwined in one another’s.
- First Wife’s Shadow by Adele Parks - such a fabulous domestic psychological thriller filled with lies, gaslighting and twists you never expected. Loved it!

What I’ve Been Up To

I have been up to a LOT of travel. Driving, flying, making my way to so many wonderful events where I’ve gotten to meet up with so many fabulous readers, some who have driven hours to come see me. It means SO much to me!!

This week, I’ve been staying with my bestie, Eliza Knight, as I do events on the Gulf Coast. On Monday, we took the entire day off and just hung out at her pool with a glass of rose and months to catch up on after we’ve both been traveling and been on book tours.

It was so relaxing and I’m left feeling recharged and so excited for all my future events!

Hat Pin Fighting

When Fashion Became a Weapon: Hat Pin Fighting in Victorian England

Sometimes historical nuggets stick on my brain for years before they end up appearing in my books. For me, hat pin fighting was one of those things.

By the 1890s, women’s fashion had shifted. Hats grew larger and more elaborate, covered in feathers, flowers, even entire birds. To secure them in place, women needed hat pins to anchor them to their thickly piled hair!

Those jewel handled hat pins may have been pretty accessories, but those pins could be up to a foot long and were incredibly sharp. And for women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they became something far more: a symbol of independence, self-protection, and quiet rebellion.

The timing of the long hat pins was quite serendipitous. As more women began traveling alone, this new independence came with a new vulnerability: unwanted advances, harassment, and danger in public spaces.

And in their hair, they had a ready-made rapier.

Soon newspapers were filled with stories of women fending off aggressors with a quick jab of a hat pin. Accounts described men backing off in shock, clutching their hands or faces, never expecting that something as feminine as a fashion accessory could double as a weapon.

In England, classes were even offered on how to properly wield a hat pin for self-defense. Women learned how to strike vulnerable areas quickly and effectively, a way to level the playing field against much larger opponents. Sort of like an early age self-defense class.

Not everyone celebrated this new form of empowerment. Unsurprisingly, some men were outraged (and a little scared). Editorials railed against the “hat pin menace,” warning of women armed with dangerous steel spikes. Laws were even proposed to limit the length of hat pins in some cities.

But the truth was clear: women had found a way to carry protection in plain sight. What began as fashion became survival. What began as an accessory became autonomy.

That is one of the many aspects of the Victorian era which fascinated me, how women pushed against the confines of silence and submission in ways both subtle and startling. It’s the same spirit that drives the women of The Secret Book Society, who carve out their own spaces of rebellion through books, friendship, and solidarity.

Hat pins may have been small, but their significance was sharp: a reminder that even in an age that tried to bind them, women found ways to defend, protect, and reclaim themselves.

Not all revolutions began with a bang. Some began with a book… and some with a hat pin.

Exciting News

The Secret Book Society was featured in Woman’s World Magazine!!!!

I grew up with Woman’s World being a constant staple in my house. I read through it as a girl, took tips from it when I got old as a woman. And now to imagine my book is featured in those hallowed pages is just wild!

If you had told little girl me that I’d grow up to be featured in Woman’s World someday, I’d never have believed you! I’m just so over the moon!!

What I’ve Been Up To

Allllll the travel, allllll the driving, signing allllll the books and LOVING every second of getting to meet so many fabulous readers!

What an incredible launch week it has been for The Secret Book Society!

I’m so grateful to the wonderful readers and in-conversation partners who joined me and the booksellers and librarians who welcomed me.

In Duxbury, MA, the Duxbury Sr Center had a sold-out crowd with delicious afternoon tea (thank you The Food Smith) and books provided by booked. Heather Webb joined me for in-conversation and we had such a fabulous chat filled with laughter, fun, and all things history and books.

In Manasquan, NJ, there was another sold-out event with Booktowne, which is just such a gorgeous book store! I was in-conversation with the incomparable Kathleen Carter who I finally got to meet in person. It was such a gorgeous evening, which made the outdoor event perfect!

In Severna Park, MD, Park Books MD welcomed me at their lovely store for a super fun chat with Kate Quinn – we’ve done many in-conversations together and they are always hilarious and usually reveal some kind of sketchy internet research we end up having to do for research.

In Westminster, MD, I was back with Park Books on Main at the Carroll County Public Library in conversation with Jenni Walsh who I hadn’t met in person yet before, but I’m pretty much sure we’re like the same person. LOL

And yesterday’s event at the Cockeysville Branch of the Baltimore Public Library was a lovely afternoon tea and in-conversation with the adult events coordinator, Douglas who was just absolutely wonderful! And a huge thank you to Snug books for providing books for the event.

I’m home for Labor Day before heading out again and trying to catch up on emails, sending out signed book plates, homework, and kitty snuggles (they haven’t left me alone since I walked in the door LOL)

These events have all been so wonderful and I am beyond grateful. Thank you for the hugs, the thoughtful questions, the laughter, and most of all, for the support that makes this journey so meaningful. And if you’re looking for a signed copy, you can find one at any of these book stores.

What I’ve Been Up To

For my birthday this past April, Mr. Awesome surprised me with the most incredible gift—a trip to Salem, a place that’s been on my must-visit list forever! He booked the whole thing, activities and all, and it could not have been more perfect. So this past week, I have been galavanting about Salem and it was just the most incredible trip EVER!

We took an amazing ghost tour, explored The House of Seven Gables where we got to climb a secret staircase, and saw Nathaniel Hawthorne’s birthplace and his actual writing desk—such a thrill for a book nerd like me! We also had way too much fun taking witchy pictures, because when in Salem…

The weather was gorgeous, the history was fascinating, and most of all, it was such a joy to share it all with him. Feeling grateful for this adventure and the memories we made together.

It’s been so wonderful to get to spend time with him (and time with my youngest in Hawaii earlier this month) before heading out for my book tour. I know I’m missed when I’m on the road and these one-on-one moments mean so much to my family and to me.

Now that I’m home, I’m signing more book plates for indie bookstores, and doing all the prep for the book tour - hair done, nails done, trying on my outfits one last time, and planning what all needs to be packed.

I can’t WAIT to get on the road and meet you!! Have a great rest of your week!
